When you are managing hormonal balance and craving a savory, melt-in-your-mouth comfort meal, skip the heavy commercial barbecue dishes laden with refined high-fructose corn syrup and inflammatory seed oils that spike insulin levels.
This vibrant Pulled Pork delivers a high-protein and nutrient-dense functional meal that satisfies your appetite, supports metabolic health, and stays completely sugar-free. Ready after a slow, effortless simmer, it’s a wholesome dinner savior that brings tender, smokey bistro flavors straight to your home kitchen.
The Mindful Evolution of the Comfort Classic
Traditional barbecue pulled pork recipes often rely on heavy bottled sauces loaded with refined sugars and artificial additives that trigger systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and stubborn hormonal fatigue.
We’ve elevated this cozy favorite by combining pasture-raised pork shoulder, an antioxidant-rich dry rub, rich bone broth, and a clean, sugar-free tomato-apple cider glaze. It provides incredible health benefits for blood sugar control and natural energy restoration without the heavy afternoon slump, keeping your hormones happily balanced
Tips for the Perfect Tender Shred
Never rush cooking your pork shoulder over high heat, which toughens the muscle fibers instead of breaking down the collagen into succulent tenderness.
Instead, use an expert slow-cooking braising technique by simmering your cut low and slow in a seasoned broth until the meat pulls apart effortlessly with two forks.

kcalIngredients
- For the Pork & Dry Rub:
3 to 4 lbs pasture-raised boneless pork shoulder (pork butt), trimmed of excess fat
1 tbsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground black pepper, and 1.5 tsp fine sea salt
1 tbsp avocado oil or extra-virgin olive oil
- For the Sugar-Free BBQ Glaze:
1 cup organic tomato passata or sugar-free ketchup
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tbsp coconut aminos (or tamari)
2 tbsp unrefined monk fruit sweetener or erythritol
1 cup collagen-rich bone broth
Directions
- Season Pork: Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Rub the mixture of smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, black pepper, and sea salt evenly over all sides of the meat.
- Sear: Heat avocado oil in a heavy Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sear the pork shoulder for 4-5 minutes per side until a rich, golden-brown crust forms. Remove pork to a plate.
- Mix Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together the tomato passata, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, coconut aminos, monk fruit sweetener, and bone broth.
- Braised Simmer: Return the seared pork shoulder to the Dutch oven and pour the sugar-free BBQ glaze all over the top. Cover tightly with a lid.
- Low & Slow Cook: Transfer to the oven preheated to 325°F (165°C) and bake for 3 to 4 hours (or transfer everything to a slow cooker on LOW for 7-8 hours) until the pork is fork-tender and falls apart easily.
- Shred & Coat: Remove the pork from the pot, shred completely using two forks, and toss the shredded meat back into the bubbling sauce until juicy and well-coated. Serve warm!
Notes
- Hormone & PCOS Support: Packed with high-quality protein to support stable blood sugar, rich amino acids, and completely free of refined sugars that trigger insulin spikes.
- Storage: Store leftover pulled pork in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to a month. It tastes even better when reheated!
